Apapa Customs Intercepts ₦3.3bn Codeine Hidden in Containers

The Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted two containers loaded with 3,398 cartons of codeine-containing syrup valued at ₦3.398 billion at the Apapa Port in Lagos.

The seizure was made during a joint operation between the NCS and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Sunday, March 15, 2026.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, Chief Superintendent of Customs Sulaiman, the interception came barely five days after the Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of Customs, visited the port and warned smugglers at Apapa Port would no longer be a safe haven for illegal trade.

The seized contraband consisted of 3,398 cartons containing 339,800 bottles of codeine syrup, which were carefully concealed inside containers loaded with household utensils.
