Nigeria, UK sign MoU on border security, migration, trade

The Federal Government and the United Kingdom have formalized three landmark agreements aimed at transforming migration management, enhancing border security and accelerating economic cooperation through expanded business visa access.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo who is on the entourage of President Bola Tinubu on a state visit to the UK signed on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

His spokesman, Babatunde Alao said the agreements comprise a comprehensive Migration Partnership, a Statement of Intent on Cooperation regarding Organized Immigration Crime and Border Security, and a strategic framework to expand business visas for UK companies operating within Nigeria.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Dr Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the pact underscores Nigeria’s commitment to a transparent migration framework that balances national interests with international obligations.

He noted that the partnership is designed to move beyond mere diplomacy toward measurable, integrated success.

“This partnership is a testament to our shared determination to build a migration system that is safe, orderly, and mutually beneficia.

“We aim for this to serve as a template for other bilateral understandings globally. Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria remains steadfast in its duty to protect its citizens while ensuring that those who abuse legal pathways are held accountable”, he said.

The expansion of business visas is viewed as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s strategy to build a trillion-dollar economy.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo noted that lowering trade barriers and addressing irregular migration are essential catalysts for socio-economic development.

He assured the UK delegation that Nigeria is “open for endless possibilities of growth” and committed to immediate action to remove existing bureaucratic hurdles.

UK Home Secretary, Rt. Hon. Shabana Mahmood, lauded the agreement, noting that Nigeria holds a “number one” priority status in the UK’s bilateral relations.

She remarked that Nigeria is the first nation to secure such an extensive and multifaceted agreement, reflecting a shared vision for the future of both countries.

Further reinforcing the economic implications of the deal, UK Trade Envoy Florence Eshalomi described the expansion of business visas as a “bold step” vital for the growth of Africa’s largest economy.

She noted that the streamlined visa processes would yield clear, tangible benefits for both Nigerian and British enterprises.

The agreements mark a new chapter in the long-standing relationship between the Nigerian Ministry of Interior and the UK Home Office, signaling a shift toward more robust, action-oriented cooperation in the years to follow.
