The Rotary Club of Anthony Golden, District 9112, has reaffirmed its commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare by distributing birth kits to about 100 pregnant women and nursing mothers at the Mende Primary Health Centre, Maryland, Lagos.
The intervention, held as part of activities marking Rotary’s Maternal and Child Health Month, was aimed at promoting safer childbirth and improving the health outcomes of mothers and newborns by providing expectant women with essential delivery materials.
Speaking during the outreach, the Project Service Chair of the club, Rotarian Nneka Ogbogu, said the initiative reflects Rotary’s humanitarian mission of supporting vulnerable members of society.
She explained that July is dedicated to Maternal and Child Health across Rotary, prompting clubs in District 9112 to carry out projects that directly benefit pregnant women and nursing mothers.
According to her, the Mende Primary Health Centre has been adopted by the club for several years, making the outreach an annual commitment rather than a one-off intervention.
Ogbogu disclosed that the club prepared birth kits for about 100 beneficiaries, expressing hope that every expectant mother would enjoy a safe pregnancy and successful delivery.
She noted that the distribution was intended to reduce some of the challenges associated with childbirth while encouraging women to continue seeking professional medical care.
“Our greatest desire is to see safe mothers and safe babies. We pray that every woman here will have a healthy pregnancy and a successful delivery,” she said.
Also speaking, the President of the Rotary Club of Anthony Golden, Rotarian Udoh Aniekan described the exercise as a demonstration of the club’s long-standing commitment to the community.
He said the club has maintained a strong partnership with the health centre for more than five years, building lasting relationships with healthcare workers and residents.
Udoh stressed that maternal and child health remains one of Rotary International’s major areas of focus, making the intervention an important part of the club’s annual service activities.
Rotarian Udoh further revealed that the club is expanding its health interventions beyond the distribution of birth kits, with separate programmes covering malaria screening and treatment, HIV testing, and support for polio immunisation.
He, however, clarified that those initiatives are being implemented independently, while the current outreach was specifically designed to support expectant mothers and nursing women through the provision of essential childbirth materials.
He also urged pregnant women to remain committed to antenatal care and always seek medical attention from qualified health professionals throughout their pregnancies.
According to him, regular visits to healthcare facilities play a vital role in ensuring safe deliveries and reducing maternal and infant mortality.
The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Rotary Club of Anthony Golden for the timely intervention, describing the support as a welcome relief that would assist many families as they prepare for childbirth.
