Eid-el-Fitr: Ebonyi residents lament hike in foodstuffs prices

Abakaliki residents in Ebonyi have expressed concern over the hike in prices of some food commodities few hours to Sallah celebration.Also a paint bucket of Onions is sold for N8, 000 as against N5,000 sold last week while a 25 Kilogram bag of local rice is sold between N18, 000 and N22, 000 as against N10, 000 sold earlier in the month.Mrs Chinelo Amah, a civil servant and resident, called on relevant authorities to intervene over the increase in the prices of foodstuffs.Amah attributed the increase to the sallah celebration and current hike in price of petroleum products.She called on the Federal Government to tackle the development to sustain the drop in price of foodstuffs witnessed since September, 2025 .She emphasised that residents witnessed drop in prices of foodstuffs and worried that the recent hike in price of the petroleum products would affect the sigh of relief witnessed since September 2025 by many households.Another civil servant and resident, Mr John Eke urged governments to pay attention to challenges associated with current hike in fuel.“Nigerians were enjoying drop in prices of foodstuffs until the current hike in fuel,” Eke said.Aminu Ahmed, a tomato dealer, claimed that the increment was due to high transportation cost occasioned by hike in price of petroleum products and the celebration.
