As part of efforts to boost economic growth and create employment, the Lekki Deep Sea Port is expected to play a major role in driving trade and industrial activity in Nigeria, creating about 170,000 jobs.During a stakeholders meeting held in Lagos on Tuesday, the Managing Director of Lekki Port, Wang Qiang, revealed that over the 45-year concession period, the port is projected to contribute about $360 billion to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).Qiang explained that the port is still in its early stages of operation despite the huge investment already made.He noted that the port is currently operating at a loss because of the high initial costs but assured that it is gradually recovering.Qiang said, “Lekki Port is the first Foreign-invested port in Nigeria(PPP) and one of the largest deep seaports in West Africa.“According to estimates by the Nigerian government, during the 45-year concession period, Lekki Port is expected to contribute USD 361 billion to Nigeria’s GDP, create 170,000 jobs, and generate USD 158 billion in direct and indirect revenues.“It will effectively promote the development of Nigeria’s industrial, service, and international trade sectors becoming a new engine of economic growth for the country.”Describing the port as a vital link in Nigeria’s logistics network, Qiang mentioned the need for stronger government support to enhance infrastructure around the facility. Also speaking, the Port Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Emmanuel Anda, commended the port’s progress, describing it as a game-changer for Nigeria’s trade and economy.Anda expressed optimism that Nigeria could become a global export hub in the next decade if the current momentum is sustained. He said, “Exports through this port are leveraging imports. We have never had it this good.“If we continue on this line of business, in the next 10 to 15 years, we’ll be a global hub for exports,” he said.He further highlighted improvements in infrastructure around the port, noting that access roads have greatly improved.“Access used to be an issue. It’s no longer an issue because the federal and state governments are determined to construct road networks,” he said.Anda also urged Nigerians to take advantage of the numerous opportunities the port offers for trade and investment.
