Police dissolve tactical units, launch new crime unit in Rivers

The Police Command in Rivers has dissolved its tactical teams as part of efforts to improve efficiency and professionalism in its operations.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, told journalists in Port Harcourt that the action followed a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

Agabe said that the disbanded tactical teams have been merged into a new unit known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).

“The VCRU is mandated to respond swiftly and decisively to incidents of violent crime, while adhering to established rules of engagement and respect for fundamental human rights,” she said.

She added that the restructuring was aimed at strengthening operational coordination and boosting public confidence in policing.

Agabe quoted the Commissioner of Police in Rivers, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, as warning against extortion, abuse of office, and other forms of unprofessional conduct among officers.

“Any violation of the Nigeria Police Force Code of Conduct will attract disciplinary action,” Adepoju said.

He reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and urged the public to cooperate with the police and report misconduct or suspicious activities.

The commissioner of police reiterated its resolve to promote effective, accountable, and people-centred policing across the state.
