MTN Nigeria has warned its subscribers against fraudulent platforms and links offering fake 25GB anniversary giveaways, even as the telecom operator confirmed that the 25GB data reward itself is genuine.
The warning came amid the circulation of messages and links on social media and other online platforms claiming to offer subscribers free 25GB data to mark MTN’s 25th anniversary.
MTN, in a scam alert, urged customers to disregard such offers unless they are accessed through its authorised platforms.
The telecom operator said the official MTN 25GB Anniversary Giveaway is available only via the MyMTN NG App and MTN eShop.
It cautioned subscribers against clicking on unverified links, disclosing personal information or making payments on platforms claiming to be offering the anniversary giveaway.
“Please beware of fake MTN 25th Anniversary 25GB giveaway offers circulating online,” MTN warned.
The company added: “The official MTN 25GB Anniversary Giveaway is available ONLY via the MyMTN NG App and MTN eShop.
“Do not click on links, share your personal information or make payments on any other platform claiming to offer the giveaway.
“Only trust official MTN channels.”
The warning is significant because the fraudulent messages are reportedly exploiting a genuine MTN anniversary promotion to make the scam appear credible.
A source at MTN confirmed that the company actually gave subscribers 25GB of free data as part of activities marking its 25th anniversary.
“Yes, we gave subscribers 25GB free to commemorate our 25th anniversary,” the source said.
However, the source of the offer is critical, as scammers could use the legitimate promotion as a bait to obtain sensitive customer information or lure unsuspecting subscribers to fraudulent platforms.
MTN therefore advised customers to verify any anniversary-related offer through its official channels before clicking on links or providing any information.
The telecom operator specifically warned subscribers not to make payments in exchange for the 25GB data, noting that any platform outside the MyMTN NG App and MTN eShop claiming to offer the promotion should be treated with caution.
The development highlights the growing risk of online fraudsters impersonating major brands and exploiting popular promotions to target consumers.
Subscribers were consequently advised to avoid forwarding unverified giveaway messages and to rely on MTN’s official communication channels for confirmation of promotions and other customer offers.
