NSE reiterates commitment to empower members, promote sustainable infrastructural devt. In Nigeria

In a bid to encourage resilient, promote sustainable infrastructure for the development of Nigerian society, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Victoria Island branch has reiterated its commitment to capacity building among members. The branch also stresses the need for collaboration across all sectors of the Nigerian economy as it will help to develop local content for national development, as this will aid Nigeria to compete globally.

 

This was said during the press briefing to announce its 2026 Engineering Week starting Thursday August 20, 2026 held at the Victoria Island head office.. Also, as part of the event to mark the week full of interesting activities is market awareness on fire.

 

Speaking on the theme of this year, “Building Smart, Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructure”, the chairman, NSEVI, Engr. Babatunde James FNSE said, “The theme reflects the urgent need for Nigeria to rethink how we plan, build and manage infrastructure in the face of population growth, climate change, technological advancement and increasing development demands”.

 

“However, Engineering Week is not only about infrastructure. It is also about people”.

 

Engr. James said, “At NSEVI, we believe that the future of engineering begins by investing in the next generation. This is why we are actively supporting STEM education in secondary schools, exposing students to engineering careers, connecting them with practicing engineers and encouraging them to see themselves as future innovators and problem-solvers”.

 

According to him, We are also committed to our “Keep a Child in School” initiative, through which we provide books and educational materials to primary school children. “To us, giving a child a book is more than charity—it is an investment in human capacity. We believe that human infrastructure is the foundation of physical infrastructure”.

 

Continuing he said, “Our Branch has also continued to engage communities and institutions through professional training, safety awareness, educational support, scholarships, outreach programs and partnerships with organisations including NIMASA, Naval Dockyard, the Federal Fire Service, FRSC and other stakeholders”.

 

He further said, “These activities reflect one central principle: Engineering must serve society. As engineers, we do not only design roads, buildings, ports, energy systems and technology. We help create the conditions that allow people and communities to thrive”.

 

“This is why we are using this Engineering Week to promote professional excellence, innovation, mentorship, education, community service and collaboration. “I also want to use this opportunity to call on government, industry, educational institutions, corporate organizations and individuals to partner with us”.

 

“Engr. James said that there is tremendous potential in our young people. One book can change a child’s trajectory. One mentor can change a young person’s ambition. One opportunity can change a life.

 

“If we invest in our children today, we will have the engineers, scientists, innovators and leaders who will build the Nigeria of tomorrow”.

 

In addition, the Vice Chairman, NSEVI, Engr. Joan Nweke FNSE, said, “There will be a public lectures with topic: The Future of Work for AI and Engineering. It’s going to be a practical example with an experts. Our special guest of the day is the President and chairman in council, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr.
